The focal point of Hawaii Kai centers around the ancient Maunalua (two mountains) fishpond and adjacent wetlands of Kuapa (fishpond wall) which started to be dredged circa 1959 to finally become the well known Koko Marina of today. In 1961 lease agreements were signed with the land owner (Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate) to develop the land around the present day Koko Marina (521 acres / 2.11 km²). Since then both commercial and residential areas have undergone well planned development from Portlock and Koko Kai on the ocean all the way to the surrounding ridges of Kamehame and Napali Haweo.
Commute to Downtown Honolulu within 30 Mins
Hawaii Kai has traditionally been thought of as an area quite distanced from Downtown Honolulu. However, with the addition of contraflow lane morning commutes from most neighborhoods of Hawaii Kai to Downtown can be done in as little as 30 minutes. With plentiful shopping possibilities at the Hawaii Kai Town Center, Koko Marina Center and Hawaii Kai Shopping Center to meet daily needs, the area is an overall convenient place to live.
